What Is GATE Score Validity And How To Evaluate it?

  • What is GATE? 

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee conduct GATE jointly for the eligible candidates. The GATE exam is conducted on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE. For candidates who are unaware about the GATE full form, it stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering . Candidates who are seeking admission or financial assistance to – Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science, for them qualifying in GATE exam is mandatory. Not only this, some colleges and institutions, which offer admission without MHRD scholarship/assistantship, for them also the GATE qualification is mandatory. Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use GATE score in their recruitment process. GATE exam is basically on the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science.

For that let us take some time to first understand the concept of validity of GATE score. The word VALIDITY, when used with GATE Exam score, becomes a very confusing term. It has two parts. The term validity when used with GATE score means:

  1. A qualifying GATE score, that means your marks in GATE Exam should be more or at least equal to the qualifying marks.

  2. A TIME PERIOD (usually in years) for which the institutions accept the GATE score.

So let’s look into these two meanings of GATE Score Validity in more depth.

Valid GATE Score:

A GATE Score is Equal to or more than the Qualifying Marks.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering also referred to as GATE opens various opportunities like IISc, IITs, NITs, recruitment in Navratna/Maharatna PSUs, research oriented organization like BARC/CSIR, higher studies in foreign universities etc. Every year thousands of students and professionals appear for the prestigious GATE exam to make their dream come true by securing good marks and rank in GATE. Nearly a month after the
GATE exam is conducted, the aspirants receive the result of their performance in the form of GATE Score Card. Every aspirant gets a score which is known as GATE score. This is the same score that the aspirants have to produce while seeking admission/job in the premier institutes and top PSUs in India. Based on the highest score achieved in the examination, in different streams, a qualifying mark is set. 

  1. The total number of candidates appearing for the paper.

  2. The difficulty level of the paper.

  3. The total available seats.

  4. Category under which the candidates will get admission.

To have a valid GATE score means you should have at least scored marks equal to the qualifying marks. To seek admission in top institutes of the country a candidate should have the minimum cut off score set by their respective institute in which they want admission. The cut-off may be done separately for the Master Degree programs and the Doctoral Degree programs. It is to be carefully noted that the different institutes have different cut off scores. The aspirants who have scored higher than or equal to the cut-off score in their respective program and stream can proceed to seek admission.

How to Use the GATE Rank Predictor?
The exam will be conducted for 27 different streams. GATE Cut off will be released soon after the declaration of result on March 22, 2022. Till that time, probable rank can be determined by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Go to GATE 2022 Rank Predictor
First of all, you have to enter the expected marks.
Then select the stream for which you have appeared in GATE.
Select Gender, category, and state.
Click on ‘Predict Now’
Step 2: Registration
A new screen will appear where you have to complete the registration process by entering your Email ID, Name, and Mobile Number.
Click on Submit
Step 3: Get your Rank
After that your estimated rank will appear on the screen.
