How To Study Engineering Mathematics For GATE Exam?

Hello Students,
Firstly, we would like to wish you good luck with the GATE preparation. Guys, engineering mathematics is one of the important parts of the GATE 2022 syllabus and it constitutes 15 marks of the GATE paper. Thus, it’s important to score excellent marks and get a good GATE rank in your exam. GATE engineering mathematics will cover the first-year basic sciences (mathematics) course in every engineering college.
Most of the syllabus will be from the first 2 semesters, while some parts will be from the second year too. Since it is more of a kind of extension of Class XI-XII mathematics, so your JEE Maths notes will also be handy for your basic preparations.
Be handy with short notes and jot down formulae in your own style and thinking ability to refer the concepts whenever required, this would be the key to prepare for such brainstorming subjects.

Topic Wise Analysis For Engineering Mathematics – GATE 2022
GATE engineering maths will be classified into 7-8 main topics. We have shared a detailed description of the mathematics topic given below.  Also, you’ll find some quick tips and tricks to prepare for engineering mathematics topics.

  • Linear Algebra (for all streams)

Important topics: Eigenvalues & vectors, Matrix Algebra, System of a linear equation, and Finding ranks and determinants of matrices.
While studying linear algebra, you should give more attention to the matrix properties; solve them, and eigenvalue problems. Most of the questions will be asked from these two sections in this part. Remember shortcuts & important properties of eigenvalues such as the relation between eigenvalues of two matrices which are inverse of each other and other similar properties. Don't spend too much time in the basis vectors and span of basis vectors to form an n-dimensional space.

  • Calculus (for all streams)

Important Topics: Limit, Maxima & Minima, Vector Analysis, Gradient, divergence, and curl, Differential calculus, Integral calculus & Vector calculus.
Further, Calculus can be classified into three categories:

  • Differential Calculus: It will cover the basic concepts of Limits, derivatives, and application of derivatives such as Increasing, Decreasing function, and Maxima & Minima problems.

  • Integral Calculus: It will cover the indefinite/definite integral and the properties of definite integrals. Stay prepared with the multiple integrals concept such as Double &Triple Integral and also Line, Surface, and Volume Integrals.

  • Vector Calculus: It will cover Gradient, Divergence & Curl, and Vector Integral Theorems (Green’s, Gauss’s, and Stokes Theorem). There will be a lot many properties of each concept and you should remember all those to solve the problems quickly such as divergence of the curl is always 0.

  • Differential equations (for all streams)

Important topics: Cauchy’s and Euler equation, Bernoulli’s Equation, and First order linear and non-linear equation.
To find a solution to differential equations is very important. Focus on higher-order differential equations along with first-order equations. Pay more attention to Bernoulli’s Equation & Euler Differential Equation. Also, in the latest years, some questions related to the existence of solution and uniqueness theorems have been seen, so these need to be prepared.

  • Complex Variables (for all streams except CS)

Important Topics: Taylor series, Cauchy and Riemann equations, and Residue Method of Integration.
One of the smallest topics in Engineering Mathematics and it can be prepared instantly & easily. Cauchy-Riemann Equations for Analytic Functions and Residue Method of Integration are two important topics that you need to practice well.

  • Numerical methods (for all streams except CS)

Important Topics: Newton-Raphson method, Integration by trapezoidal and Simpson’s rules, Trapezoidal Rule, and Bisection Method.
It’s a part of most engineering streams and you will need to mug up various formulae and rules. Use a calculator to get answers for the problems, speed, and accuracy. Two things will be important in this section – Solving equations by methods like Newton-Raphson and Bisection Method, and Numerical Integration techniques by methods like Trapezoidal Rule and Simpson’s rule.

  • Transform theory (for Gate ECE & EE streams)

Important topics: Laplace transform, Fourier series, and Z transform.
Transform theory is for EE and ECE candidates. This syllabus comes under communication courses (signal & system, communicating devices) in the first 4 semesters of the engineering discipline. Students can refer to Ekeeda
GATE online classes to cover the syllabus of this part. Laplace and inverse Laplace transforms are important topics that have to be practiced well.

  • Probability and Statistics (For all streams except MT &CS)

Important topics: Conditional & Joint probability, Bayes theorem, Uniform, normal and exponential distribution, Covariance and correlation, and Probability distribution.
General problems with probability need practice. Be thorough with Baye’s Theorem, and focus more on Random Variables like Poisson’s Distribution and other distributions. Statistics is very important – mean, median and mode concepts, coefficient of co-relation, so do make short notes for each of the concepts.

  • Discrete Mathematics (for CS)

Important topics: Relations and Functions, Graph connectivity and coloring, Mathematics logic, Set theory, Permutation and Combination, Boolean algebra, Predicates and quantifiers, Hasse diagram, Partial order and lattices, and Binary tree.
This topic is for the CS stream, and you should have knowledge of CS basics along with data structure. It’s a high-scoring topic and most of the chapters like Set theory, logic, trees, and graphs, Permutation, and Combination are very well covered during CS studies. It needs a lot of practice and understanding of various rules

Preparation Tips for GATE 2022
As a beginner, you will have to fuel-in 2 to 3 hours daily, and it will take around a month to finish the GATE Engineering Mathematics Subject. Practice is the key to all your problems. It’s important to refer to one and quality study material because when you follow too many sources, you will be confused and consume time.
