GATE Exam Pattern 2022

 

GATE Exam Full Form stands for ‘Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering’ Exam. It is conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Master’s in Technology (M. Tech) and Ph.D. admissions to top-tier Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other institutes/universities across India. GATE also opens the door for booming career in public sector undertaking and field of research. Some of the established PSUs that use GATE score for hiring include ONGC, HPCL, BHEL, DRDO, BARC, GAIL, SAIL, NHPC, HAL, BEL, etc.

GATE is an All-India exam jointly conducted by the seven IITs - Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

IIT Kharagpur will conduct the GATE 2022 Exam. The exam conducting body will release the GATE 2022 Exam pattern along with eligibility criteria and exam’s information brochure. GATE 2022 Pattern include the number questions, types of questions and the marking schemes for all the 27papers/subjects for the exam. Candidates who wish to appear for GATE 2022 should familiarize themselves with the GATE paper pattern, entire syllabus and of course marking schemes.

  • There will be total 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 question will carry a total of 15 marks for General Aptitude (GA) section.  For papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics section will carry 28% of the total marks.
  • As per the GATE Exam pattern, the General Aptitude (GA) section will carry 15% of the total marks and the subject of the paper will constitute for remaining 72% of the total marks.
  • For papers bearing the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, XH and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and subject of the paper will constitute the remaining 85% of the total marks.

Since candidates are allowed to appear for two papers (only specified set) of the 27 papers, they should carefully make a choice of the papers they wish to appear.

Candidates are advisable to appear in the papers appropriate to the discipline of his or her qualifying degree. However, they are also free to choose any paper according to their future plans based on the GATE eligibility criteria of the institute or university they wish to seek admission.

Usually, GATE doesn’t repeat questions from previous year papers but it concepts will be expected over and again. Thus, it important to solve PYQPs for at least past 10 to 15 years and thoroughly prepare for the concepts.

Marking Scheme

All the questions will carry 1 or 2 marks

For MCQs with 1 mark: 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

For MCQs with 2 marks:  2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect response.

 

Please Note: There won’t be any negative marking for Multiple Select Question (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

 

GATE Exam Question Papers

As per the GATE 2022 Pattern, there will be different types of questions in all the 27 papers:

  1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) will carry 1 or 2 marks in all the papers and sections. It would be objective in nature, and each question will have a choice of four answers. Candidates have to mark the correct answer.
  2. Numerical Answer Questions carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. The answer would be a real number and no choices will be given for this type of questions. Candidates can enter the number using virtual keypad.

Note: For 1 Mark MCQs, 1-3 marks are deducted for every wrong answer and For 2 Marks MCQs, 2/3 marks are deducted for every wrong answer. No Marks are deducted for MSQs and NAT questions.

GA is common for all the papers and carry a total of 15 marks.

GATE Exam Pattern 2022 (Subject Wise) – Except GG, XE, and XL

Subject papers will contain total 55 questions - 25 Questions with 1 mark (sub-total 25 marks) and 30 questions with 2 marks each (sub-total 60 marks). The questions papers will consist of Multiple choice questions and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).

For NAT, choices will not be provided. Candidates will have to enter the answer that would be real number using virtual keypad. An appropriate range will be considered while evaluating the answers, so that candidates are not penalised due to any round-off errors.

GATE 2022 Exam Pattern – GG (Geology & Geophysics)

  • Other than mandatory GA section, GG will consists two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A is compulsory for all the candidates.
  • Part B contains two section i.e Section 1 (Geology) & Section 2 (Geophysics)
  • Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and questions in either section 1 or 2 of part B
  • Part A consists of 25 questions with 1 mark (sub-total 25 marks). Some of these would be NAT questions.
  • Either section Part B (1 or 2) consists of 30 questions with 2 marks each (sub-total 60 marks). Some of these would also be NAT questions.

GATE 2022 Exam Pattern – XE (Engineering Sciences)

GA – General Aptitude Section For 15 marks (Compulsory)

Section A – Engineering Mathematics (compulsory)

  • This section contains 11 questions with total of 15 marks, 7 questions carry 1-mark each (sub-total 7 marks), and 4 questions carry 2-marks each (sub-total 8 marks). Some of these would be NAT questions.
  • For any two of B to H Sections in XE Paper: The choice of two sections from B to H can be done during the exam once you view the questions.
  • Only TWO optional sections can be answered at a time. If you wish to change midway of the exam to another optional section, you will have to deselect one of the previously chosen optional sections from B to H.
  • Each of the optional sections of the XE paper (Sections B through H) contain 22 questions with a total of 35 marks. Of these 9 questions carry 1 mark (subtotal 9 marks) and 13 questions carry 2 marks each (total 26 marks). Some of these would be NAT questions.

GATE 2022 Exam Patten – XL (Life Science)

GA – General Aptitude Section For 15 marks (Compulsory)

Section P – Chemistry (Compulsory)

  • This section contains 15 questions that carry a total of 25 marks. Out of these 5 questions will carry 1 mark each (subtotal 5 marks) and 10 questions carry 2 marks each (subtotal 20 marks). Some of these would be NAT questions.
  • For any two of XL sections Q to U: The choice of two sections from Q to U can be done at the time of exam once you’ve viewed the questions.
  • Only TWO optional sections can be answered at a time. If you wish to change in the midway of the exam to another optional section, you will have to deselect one of the previously selected optional sections (Q to U)
  • Each of the optional sections of the XL paper (sections Q through U) contains 20 questions that carry a total of 30 marks. Out of these, 10 questions will carry 1 mark each (sub-total 10 marks) and 10 questions will carry 2 marks (sub-total 20 marks). ). Some of these would be NAT questions.

Can You Provide The Details Of The Questions Allotted For 2 Marks Each?

As per the GATE Exam Paper Pattern, the question numbers 26 to 51 and question numbers 61 to 65 are allotted two marks each.

Will Questions Based On Engineering Mathematics Asked In Every GATE Paper?

No! GATE papers with code AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, and XL will not consist of Engineering Mathematics questions.

Does Numeric Answer Type Questions Have Fixed Marks?

No, Numeric Answer Type questions won't have fixed marks, it may vary between 25 - 40 marks as per the GATE pattern.
