GATE Exam 2022: An Overview

 

What is GATE?

GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an online-based national level post-graduate entrance exam. It is conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Masters in Technology (M. Tech), and direct Ph.D. admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other prestigious universities and institutes across India. GATE is jointly conducted by the seven IITs - Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Chennai, and Roorkee along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

GATE is held for all the science undergraduates across India. It also opens a gateway to international students who stay in countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Other than this, GATE provides individuals with excellent career opportunities in public sector organizations (PSUs) and in the field of research. Some of the PSUs and research organizations that use the GATE score for providing jobs include ONGC, NTPC, GAIL, HPCL, PGCIL, BHEL, BSNL, HPCL, NHPC, BARC, DRDO, etc. GATE is usually conducted in January or February every year. It's a single system- based paper that is conducted for three hours and it usually tests the comprehensive knowledge of the applicants on undergrad engineering topics.

About GATE 2022 Exam

GATE Exam 2022, will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur, and it will soon release the official information brochure for all the branches of GATE exam. The GATE exam is going to be conducted from 5 to 7 February 2022 and 12 to 14 February 2022 (Tentative) in various cities across India. GATE scores are valid for a period of three successive years.

GATE Examination is conducted at national level and roughly 1 million candidates are expected to appear for the GATE 2022 Exam. GATE Score carries a high weightage in top-tier institutes for M. Tech admission process and also in prestigious PSUs for various engineering-related jobs. The GATE 2022 examination will also be conducted overseas in various countries like Nepal, Singapore, UAE etc. The GATE 2022 examination is a Computer Based Test (CBT).

To appear for GATE, candidates should have completed 10+2+2 or 10+3+1, currently studying in 3rd or higher years of any undergrad degree OR should have already graduated from government-approved degree programs in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce /Arts.

What Is New In GATE 2022 Exam?

  • Exam Pattern - To check the detailed changes in the GATE Paper Pattern: Click here. A new pattern of questions has been added. GATE Examination will be fully Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • New Papers: Two New subject papers are introduced - Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) taking the total to 27 subjects.
  • Exam Centers: Four new cities are Jhansi (IIT Kanpur), Dhenkanal (IIT Kharagpur), Chandrapur (IIT Bombay), and Muzaffarnagar (IIT Roorkee) are added as exam centers and Pala (IIT Madras has been removed.
  • Exam centers in International cities might be removed depending on the travel restrictions.
  • Relaxed Eligibility Criteria - Applicants who are currently in 3rd or higher year of undergraduate engineering degree will be eligibility for GATE 2022 Exam. 
  • Reservation Quota for EWS Candidates: A 10% reservation quota for Economically Weaker Section (EWS or GEN-EWS) candidates who wish to participate in the GATE exams.
  • Thumb Impression: Candidates don't have to upload their thumb impression while submitting the GATE application form.
  • Virtual Calculator: Candidates will be given the virtual calculator during GATE exam. Candidates will not be allowed to attempt the exam with a Scientific Calculator.

GATE 2022 Exam Important Events

  • GATE 2022 Exam will be conducted by Indian Institute Of Technology, Kharagpur
  • Two Sessions - Morning and Afternoon every day
  • GATE 2022 Exam will be fully Computer Based Test
  • Two New Subjects namely - Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Science (XH) are added
  • The total number of subjects in GATE 2022 will now be 27
  • All Test Papers of GATE 2022 will be entirely objective type.
  • The pattern of questions will include (i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), (ii) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and/or (iii) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • Eligibility Criteria - GATE 2022 exam eligibility is relaxed to 10+2+3. It means even a third-year undergraduate student can appear for the examination.
  • There won't be age limit for the GATE examination
  • Aspirants can now opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations
  • Your GATE scorecard will remain valid for THREE years from the date of announcement of the GATE result
  • Due to Covid-19, the examinations at international venues might be dropped, if the situation is not conducive by October/November 2021

What Is A Good GATE Score To Secure PG Admissions In IITs, IIITs, NITs?

GATE score is calculated out of 1000 and the GATE marks will be calculated out of 100. An ideal score to secure admission in top-tier institutes would be anywhere between 600- 800.

Will I Be Able To Change The GATE Exam Paper Or Gate Examination City After Submitting The Application?

YES! A request for the GATE Examination paper or city change will be accepted along with additional payment. A specific date will be provided by the conducting body.

How Much Time Is Required For GATE Preparation?
