To be eligible for GATE, candidates should have completed 10+2+2 or 10+3+1, currently studying in 3rd or higher years of an undergrad degree, OR should have already graduated from government-approved degree programs in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts.

Candidates with qualifications through an examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E / B. Tech - with section A or equivalent are also eligible for the GATE exam.

There are two new subjects introduced in GATE 2021 namely - Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Science (XH). Thus, the total number of subjects in GATE 2021 will now be 27. You can apply for only 1 paper out of the 27 for GATE 2021. It’s advisable to appear for a paper based on the discipline of your B. Tech / B.E degree. However, you’re free to choose any paper according to your GATE admission plans, eligibility criteria of the institutes where you wish to take the admissions.

There are a total of 65 questions with a total of 100 marks. The exam duration will be for 3 hours (180 minutes). Type of Questions: Includes Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

For MCQs carrying 1 mark each -1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer and for MCQs carrying 2 marks each -2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. There won’t be any negative marking for MSQ & NAT Questions.
