The Future Of Augmented Reality And Virtual Reality

Technology is on the cusp and has now intercepted in each & every sector, segment, and industry. In the last decade, due to the technological advancements of XR products in leaps & bounds, there has been the introduction of Augmented reality and Virtual reality technology. This has also given rise to mixed reality (MR). These technologies have started influencing human lives at its utmost potential. AR and VR will transform each and every aspect of the future that we all deal with such as travel & tourism, education, health care, movies & media, the environment, and more. During the early 90’s various high-quality headsets were released by companies that would allow the users to play videos and listen through headsets from external devices.
Later, in the next decades, smart devices such as the ‘Google’ glass explorer was discovered that would capture people’s imagination. It was the first of its kind ‘Augmented reality” available in the markets to the consumer. Although, it did not take off as per the expectations; however, it paved the way for other unique and innovative products to be invented and introduced to the audience. Further, more and more VR and AR products were released such as ARKit4 was released by Apple which is the latest version of open-source augmented reality development tools. MobiDev’s AR was released as a demo of indoor navigation in practice the potential of the technology.
Wait! Wait! This is a whole lot of information to soak in and at times, you will wonder what is this enthralling world of AR VR Technology. We will help you understand the basics of AR and VR technology.

What is AR VR Technology?
Before creating your own theories and specific discussion about how AR and VR are applicable in the real world, its’ worth holding on and distinguishing between the two technologies that run on a parallel track.
What is AR?
Augmented Reality is an interactive experience of the real-world environment in which objects of the real world are enhanced through computer-general information – sometimes across various sensory systems. AR binds real and virtual worlds together, gives real-time interaction and accurate 3-D images of virtual and real objects. AR overlays digital content and information into the physical world. AR opens up new ways for your devices to help you throughout your hustle-bustle day by giving digital content in the same way you experience the world. It lets you search things visually and simply by pointing your camera.
What is VR?
Virtual Reality is a simulating experience that will be similar to and completely different from the real world. There will be either headset or multi-projected environments to create realistic images, sounds, and other sensations that will enhance the user’s physical presence in the virtual environment. You can look through the artificial world, navigate in it and interact with virtual features or items to get impeccable solutions. Oculus also released a The Quest - VR headset where you don’t need to connect to a computer. It proves VR doesn’t need to be tethered to a computer or laptop. Google Cardboard helps you experience virtual reality in a simple, fun, and exciting way.
How Is Augmented Reality Different From Virtual Reality?
There are various AR/VR devices available in the market such as headsets, tablets, smartphones, consoles, and more. Every AR/VR device offers a different level of experience in the reality spectrum; however, they have certain limitations. Many virtual reality headsets rely on smartphones for the content to be displayed on the screen. While these smart devices are good for VR; however, they lack the visual quality that can give the audience an enthralling experience. Headsets tend to be bulky and thus, you cannot make prolonged use of them.

  • What is the future of AR/VR devices?

  • How things are going to evolve with augmented and virtual reality technology?

  • What if we could see through the screens surrounded by us?

Experts suggest Virtual and augmented reality technology will get be consolidated. It will be available in two forms namely, tethered systems and standalone units in the future.
Tethered systems are units or wearables on the head, with a wire attached to a processing unit.
Standalone units will have various types of systems such as display to processing and it will be within the unit and will be available in the form of wearables. Since manufacturers choose a mix of standalone and tethered, we are already able to see the early signs of these trends. Although some standalone units are available in the market, these devices are rather complex and difficult to implement.
Today, we tend to compromise with augmented and virtual reality devices. Because none of the existing systems are giving users a complete, seamless, and immersive experience. Most of the systems lack natural & wider ‘Field Of View (FOV), have restricted display resolution, lower brightness, shorter battery life, and lack 3D sensing capabilities. It will take another couple of years before we experience true and seaming integrated AR/VR applications. For instance,

  • Pokémon Go has induced AR technology; however, it’s just the tip of what is possible.

  • Amazon has brought AR technology to hair services and online shopping

  • Kuehne+Nagel - Swiss MRO logistics firm has implemented AR in its operations in various elements across the company’s logistics processes.

  • Equinix - A digital leader has also implemented AR & VR strategies as part of a comprehensive digital transformation initiative.

The real question is, once the market demand increases, how will smartphones and other electronic devices witness an enhanced version with help of augmented reality and virtual reality technology. As per market research, with in-store visits have drastically cut down due to lockdowns, AR adoption for shopping has increased with a steep rise in the past year.
Future Scope Of AR And VR
Covid-19 pandemic has significantly contributed towards the augmented reality and virtual reality technology market growth since more & more businesses have turned completely into the remote. Another reason for Augmented reality and virtual reality markets to grow fast will be factors like higher demand for smartphone-based augmented reality, growing takeovers and company mergers, advanced augmented and virtual reality technology, high demand for advanced tools in the entertainment sector, and more adoption of AR VR technology in education, health care, and retail industries. The augmented reality and virtual reality market size stood at approx. $15 billion in 2020 is projected to grow at a staggering rate of a CAGR 40%. It will touch around $450 billion by 2030.
Many large enterprises show the highest growth in the augmented and virtual reality markets and are expected to maintain their dominance in the forthcoming years. Augmented and virtual reality has penetrated nearly every sector such as automotive, manufacturing, construction, airlines, healthcare, smartphones, education, real estate, sports, and more. The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) segment is expected to witness higher growth due to the AR VR technology such as lesser field staff, no expenses on training, inventory setups, faster solutions, and better customer satisfaction.

Digital Infrastructure For AR and VR Implementations
The emergence of AR and VR across various form of industries show how our globe is getting more & more dependent on data and stays interconnected. The cumulative effects of this data-dense information that flows across users, servers, computers, and content providers lead to rising demand for high-bandwidth, low-latency connections and instant access to AR/VR partner ecosystems. World’s digital infrastructure company – Equinix offers the foundation to ensure that these technologies are seamlessly integrated into the everyday digital landscape.
Through Equinix all the cloud providers, major global networks, and important technology providers; co-resident within a single digital framework. Equinix gives access to all the partners you need to achieve your AR and VR deployment vision. It’s because the technology and content providers you need are scattered across various multiple clouds.
Thus, the hybrid multi-cloud solution will come into play by allowing you to concurrently connect to all the right clouds and get access to various services and resources you will require. It’s an environment that will blend private and public cloud infrastructure and simplify global resource connectivity. Future AR/VR devices will give a rather personalized, accessible, and properly designed experience. In the next couple of years, we will be able to see new AR glasses with LTE capabilities that will be the smartphone alternative. With improved technology and AR VR capabilities, the factor for consumer electronics will change and we will never turn back. In the coming years, we will use AR technology to check text messages and smart glasses to view Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts.

On A Concluding Note -
Augmented reality is less mature than virtual reality due to the limitations of AR technologies, lack of standard process, and higher pricing. It is already being utilized in industries such as healthcare, banking & finance, logistics, manufacturing, etc. Augmented reality is typically delivered through headsets from Oculus, Lenovo, Microsoft Hololens, and more that show real signs that the technology is set to change the commercial and industrial segment.
Against this virtual reality is a lot mature than the existing augmented reality available in the markets. The required software and hardware platforms to create exuberant VR experiences are available. With the availability of advanced systems like Oculus Rift being coupled with 360 cameras, the virtual reality experience is quickly finding new avenues in our lives. Virtual reality technology shows efficient industry use from real estate to the tourism sector & entertainment sector.
