Mechanical Engineering - Courses, Subjects, Exams, Scope & Careers

Mechanical Engineers play a pivotal role in various heavy industries such as energy conversion, biotechnology, computers, electronics, aerospace, and countless others. Basically, its role is to take any product through the journey from concept to commissioning, in other words from idea to the marketplace.

What Is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest fields of engineering that basically deals with the design, construction, and operations of Machines. A degree in the Mechanical field will let students acquire the basic understanding and knowledge of how heavy-duty tools and machinery which are mostly complicated and huge do work. A candidate pursuing mechanical engineering will get professional knowledge on designing automobiles, electric motors, electric circuits, aircraft, and other heavy vehicles & their functionality.
If you see, Mechanical engineering has a lot of depth and width that allows candidates to choose several career options. You can design any complex system or product, acquire teamwork skills to design, produce and market a system or product, and gain the ability to overcome any constraints along the way. Mechanical engineering can be termed as 'Mother of Engineering' you can design everything from a small battery to medical devices, personal computers, automobiles, aircraft or rocket engines, air conditioners, construction machinery to electric power plants, and much more. These engineers are considered as the inventors of better and happy tomorrow. In India, Mechanical engineering is offered by many prestigious engineering colleges/universities at the undergraduate & postgraduate level where students are awarded BTech and MTech degrees respectively.

Mechanical Engineering Scope: India and Abroad
Mechanical Engineering has a broad future in India and overseas, with loads of opportunities for young and dynamic engineering. In terms of career opportunities, these professionals can find excellent opportunities in government organizations, management, and law among others. Candidates with a Mechanical Engineering degree can secure jobs in divisions such as aerospace, chemical manufacturing plants, automobile, R&D, oil rigs, construction and real estate, railway factories, and many others. With the advent of technology, the expertise and skills of Mechanical engineers are increasingly in demand for various technology-specific domains such as nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and energy conservation, among others.
Also, various PSUs in India hire Mechanical engineers through the GATE examination, thereby giving them a chance to settle down for a dream career. With a conducive work environment, good pay and incentives, and other amenities, PSU provides a promising future for individuals. Some of the top PSUs in India that hire through GATE include BHEL, HPCL, DRDO, NPCIL, SAIL, BARC, Power grid, and more. Other than PSU hiring, after M. Tech you can further pursue your career in Ph.D. research wherein you will be paid a stipend and later get recruited as professors or HOD in various prestigious universities and institutes across India. You can also secure jobs in the research wing of various government or private organizations.

Mechanical Engineering Career Skills
Although, possessing the relevant educational qualification is a must to pursue your career ahead in Mechanical engineering; however, specific skillsets can unleash loads of growth opportunities and taste success in the field. The right set of skills acts as a booster in your mechanical engineering career life. You will need to follow the given skills if you really want to stand out from the crowd.

  • Innovative Thinking: This is the most important skill irrespective of any discipline or field of work. Mechanical engineers should be creative with their ideas that would bring profit, smooth process operation, and execution for the companies. They need to have the ability to think out of the box when it requires the most or provide brainstorming solutions to constraints that would come in the way.

  • Excellent Technical & Budgeting Skills: Mechanical Engineers don’t just design systems and products, they also look after the implementation, operation, and maintenance of these designs. With sound technical and budgeting skills, they can figure out the most budget-friendly means to run the technologies and book profits for the firm or process thereby ensuring their durability and effectiveness.

  • Ability To Work Under Pressure: Engineers of every discipline face peer pressure at the workplace due to technological advances and overcoming constraints. Those who can work calmly and positively under pressure will find success and better opportunities in the future.

  • Solution Provider & Analyser: With good analyzing power and solution provider skills you will be able to address the issues with apt solutions; the lack of such skill will act as a flaw in your professional life.
