Civil Engineering - Courses, Subjects, Exams, Scope & Careers

‘Vishwakarma’ is known as the Divine Engineer Of the World and Civil Engineer is no less than the real-world Vishwakarma that constructs roads, bridges, dams, canals, docks, highways, airports, skyscrapers, tunnels, sewage systems, water treatment facilities, and more. It is the civil engineer that paves way for smooth and successful transportation and living on the earth.
What Is Civil Engineering?
Yes! Civil engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines that involves planning, designing, construction, maintenance & supervision of various infrastructure that leads to movements, living, and facilities essential to modern life such as or you can say rather a convenient and hassle-free life. Other than the creation of existing infrastructure, as a civil engineer you are also responsible for protecting the public, private and environmental health and improve existing infrastructure. In layman’s terms, Civil engineers design, create and connect the beautiful world around us. They make our villages, towns, and metropolitans run for the people’s betterment and ease of living.
As per the Global Market Insights, Inc. research report, the civil engineering market size will expand up to USD  12 trillion by 2025.  In India, there are top-notch colleges and universities that offer Civil engineering as one of the mainstream engineering disciplines at the UG and PG level, thus leading B. Tech and M. Tech degrees respectively.
Also, various PSUs in India hire civil engineers through the GATE examination, thereby giving them a chance to settle down for a dream career. With a conducive work environment, good pay and incentives, and other amenities, PSU provides a promising future for individuals. Some of the top PSUs in India that hire through GATE include: BHEL, HPCL, DRDO, NPCIL, SAIL, BARC, Powergrid, and more. Other than PSU hiring, after M. Tech you can further pursue your career in Ph.D. research wherein you will be paid a stipend and later get recruited as professors or HOD in various prestigious universities and institutes across India. You can also secure jobs in the research wing of various government or private organizations.
Civil engineering is a prominent part of various industries and it's divided into various sub-disciplines. Most civil engineers choose to specialize in the below-mentioned sub-disciplines of civil engineering. The sub-discipline a civil engineer pursues will determine the type of work they do. For instance, construction civil engineers will look after buildings, and other structures that facilities living or space of working, shopping, and more.
Some common duties of a Civil engineer include:

  • Study surveys, reports, and other data to plan public/ private projects

  • Oversee the repair or replacement of existing infrastructure

  • Use software to design & plan various structures such as transportation systems and buildings

  • Audit materials that will be used to construct structures

  • Submit local, state, and federal permits required for projects

  • Assess and propose cost estimates for engineering projects

  • Oversee various construction aspects and ensure you meet requirements from start to finish

  • Present environmental and property-related findings to the public

  • Manage construction teams that may include surveyors, architects, and construction manager

So, now that you have set your heart on civil engineering, lets introduce you to some of the specializations you can choose from:
