v Objective:

Strength of Materials is a part of the second year syllabus. The subject is included with an objective to familiarize students with the concepts of stress, strain, force, etc.

Strength of Materials deals with the study and analysis of various types of loads, induced stresses on different mechanical components, etc. This subject is a crucial part of the mechanical, civil, automobile and similar branches of engineering. The concepts included in Strength of Materials are used while studying the buckling, bending and other deformation in different components of mechanical systems and form the foundation for related subjects of later years for the above-mentioned streams like Machine Design, Mechanical Vibrations, etc.

Strength of Materials demonstrates the application of the fundamental knowledge about various types of loading and stresses induced. It helps to study the effects of component dimensions, materials and shapes on stresses and deformations. Students are prepared to analyse the deflection in beams, buckling and bending phenomenon in columns, struts, etc.
