PN Junction Diode Construction and Working
The PN Junction is a simplest two terminal electronic device. The PN junction has two terminals - Anode (+) and Cathode (-). This device allows current to flow in only one direction - positive to negative terminal. The electrical representation is shown in the figure. The silver bar on the diode represents the cathode terminal.
Construction of PN Junction
The construction of PN junction deals with bringing the P-type and N-type semiconductor material together. The P-type material is obtained by doping the intrinsic semiconductor with trivalent impurity and N-type material is obtained by doping the intrinsic semiconductor with pentavalent impurity. The current flowing through the diode is due to the electrons. The electrons flow is always opposite to direction of current.
